HELPING HANDS CAMBODIA

AN OVERVIEW OF OUR WORK

Below you can see an overview of some of Helping Hands Cambodia's current projects.

We presently work in a number of villages in the Commune of Doun Keo located between 25 - 40 km's from Siem Reap.

THE HELPING HANDS SCHOOL

We have built and operate a school in the village of Prasat Char.  Amongst other things, we teach the children English, Cambodian reading and writing to a kindergarten class and health and hygiene related issues.  We have approximately 250 students.

OUR BREAKFAST PROGRAMME

All the students (approximately 100) that attend our school in the morning receive a nutritious breakfast.

The meal they receive is prepared in accordance with guidelines from the World Food Programme and is aimed at combating protein malnutrition.

Please click here to read more about our breakfast programme.

EYE CARE PROGRAMME

We help people to obtain treatment for eye problems.  We partner with a local eye doctor for this.  Without our assistance they would not be able to access this treatment - the cost is simply out of their reach.

Please click here to read more about our eye care programme.

MEDICAL CARE FOR EAR/HEARING PROBLEMS

In conjunction with another local organisation, All Ears Cambodia, we operate clinics for people with ear and hearing problems.

Please click here to read more about our ear care programme.

 HELP FOR GENERAL MEDICAL PROBLEMS

Helping Hands likes to encourage people to help themselves, but occasionally we encounter people with medical problems who are too poor, or who have no access to the appropriate medical care.  In these instances we offer them whatever help they need.

 AGRICULTURAL TRAINING AND IRRIGATION

Our Agricultural Training Programme teaches the villagers better agricultural practices.

We provide all participants who complete the course with drip feed irrigations systems.

After the course is completed the villagers continue to meet once a week to discuss agricultural issues and participate in a community savings scheme.

Please click here to read more about our agriculture training programme.

WORK FOR A BIKE PROJECT

This programme aims to provide every household in a village with a bicycle in return for a member of that household doing 5 days labour on either repairing or building a road within their village.

A bicycle is an invaluable item of family equipment.  It provides family members with enhanced access to jobs, school, medical care and economic opportunities.

SANITATION AND TOILET BUILDING

In order to address the issue of bad sanitation and the complete lack of toilets in our target villages we have begun a toilet and sanitation project.

BUILDING ROADS AND BRIDGES

One of the many challenges of living in a poor rural community is the lack of basic infrastructure such as adequate roads and bridges.

Helping Hands has facilitated the building of a number of bridges and under road culverts and many kilometers of roads.

This project is operated in conjunction with our work for a bicycle project.

INCOME GENERATION PROJECT

A group of women in Prasat Char village make rag dolls called Krama kids and Krama Kreatures.  They are hand sewn and are made out of kramas (traditional Cambodian scarves).  They are sold to tourists in Siem Reap.

Please click here to read more about our income generation project.

THE HELPING HANDS TEAM

The Helping Hands team consists of 10 Cambodians (some full-time and some part-time) and one foreigner (Deborah from Australia, who started Helping Hands and who works on an unpaid basis).
